Back to the Dog House

"When I was a little squirt and first saw my family sitting on these nice, cushy sofa and chairs, I figured that was for me. At first, mom would pick me up and put me on her lap. That was cozy. It wasn't long before I was able to jump up on the sofa all by myself. That was handy. And then one day, when I was napping on my favorite end of the sofa, mom scared me to death! She yelled out my name, 'Artie! (Short for Artica as in Ant because I'm all white.)'Artie, you're too big to be on the sofa. Off! Off! Off!' So, I jumped right down, and after I'd gotten my bearings, I jumped back up again. Wouldn't you? After all, this had been my place for quite a while! Now my life is full of ups and downs!"

Artie should never have been allowed on the sofa - if the sofa was eventually going to be off limits. Chances are, he probably gets on other things - like the bed and the outdoor chaise. Let's face it, he jumps on furniture! If you want your dog to stay off the furniture, remember it's all or nothing. Proper obedience training is a must, especially with a lab, who needs to have all commands enforced or he'll take advantage of you and obey only when he feels like it. Fortunately, there's a solution.

If your dog won't stay off the furniture, you need to remember that it's all or nothing. You can't let the dog sleep on the bed and expect him to stay off the sofa. You can't allow your dog on the furniture sometimes. A good dose of concentrated, professional training with love, praise and affection will help solve problems and make life pleasant again, for you and your dog.
