You
don't have to live in costly chaos.
"I often am
amazed at the number of people who, from the moment they bring a
puppy into the house, live in a constant state of chaotic
dysfunction -- until they seem to think it is normal. Well, it
is not normal. And not training your dog does not save you
money. It is costly in both stress and destruction." Uncle
Matty
If you have a puppy, warm and fuzzy quickly changes to "the crazies!"
which can be described as
constant anxiety exacerbated by costly destruction with no end
in sight.
In fact, the longer you wait to train your puppy the worse it gets. Little problems that could have been solved easily, turn into big bad habits that require more training and behavior modification than would have been necessary in the first place. That's why Uncle Matty recommends that your puppy begin basic on-leash training and problem solving when he or she is between seven and ten weeks of age. This will help you avoid "the crazies!" that require constant crisis management and usually result in a dysfunctional household.
Excuses, excuses. When things get out of hand some people have interesting excuses for why their dog is piddling in the house, tearing up the screen door, chewing the chair legs, barking at the neighbors and digging up the yard. They say things like
He does not do it all the time.
A dog that piddles in the house only once a week has done it 52 times in a year. That's a lot of stink.
He'll grow out of it.
No. He'll grow into the problems -- they just get bigger.
Dog training costs too much.
Not nearly as much as new landscaping or carpet replacement for example.
