"The first thing I ever got to chew, was a sneaker like this one. Rather than throw out his old shoes, my dad gave 'em to me! Everyone knows that terriers and shoes go together like cats and claws! So tell me. Why is it that every time I get a new shoe to chew on, the whole house goes crazy?"

Give Jack a shoe, and he'll take the closet. After all, he can't tell one shoe from another - new or old. Puppies chew because they are teething. Older dogs chew for a variety of reasons - they chew to escape if they're left alone and behind closed doors. They chew because their behavior was not changed and now chewing is a habit. Fortunately, there's a solution.

If your dog is a chewer, you need to change the behavior at once. Chewing is one of the most destructive and expensive problems you will ever face as a dog owner. Dogs can destroy furniture, woodwork, curtains, draperies, clothing, carpeting, children's toys and your valuables. So find out why your dog is chewing and pick an appropriate solution. If your dog is teething, wring out some wet wash cloths and freeze them. When he feels like chewing give him a cold, frozen cloth to soothe his tender gums. It works wonders. Proper training is also important for any dog with behavior problems. For more information, select from the list below. Or go directly to Basic Training and Problem Solving.
