Met Life Auto & Home

Headquarters: Warwick, Rhode Island

Met Life Auto & Home does not exclude any breed of dog from homeowner's liability coverage and they do not impose a surcharge if you own a certain breed of dog.

However, a statement released by the company did include the policy that if an animal is banned or registered as vicious, Met Life will not insure the risk. "Regarding ordinances requiring such things as registration of a vicious dog or banning of certain breeds, we don't make the laws, we just obey them."

If the company knows a dog is aggressive, either from prior bite history, a canine inspection, an adjuster being on site and discovering a dog they did not know was there previously, or they have other information that details the animal's unacceptable response to non-threatening human contact, the company will simply not insure the home.

The overall decision to accept or deny the risk is made after the company identifies the breed and evaluates behavior, training, age, temperament, restraint and past bite history. Met Life will consider other evidence that a dog is not inherently aggressive, i.e. through a letter from a vet.

"We recognize that it's probably not the animal's fault that it acts that way, but more likely is reflective of the owner's failure to train the animal or to expose it to a number of different situations so it could get used to variations in human contacts, said Joseph Madden, Met Life spokesperson. "I think we are as concerned about the lack of responsible behavior on the part of some pet owners as we are about the way the dog responds to people."

"Simply put, says Met Life's company statement, "dogs that are obedience trained, well cared for and responsibly supervised are rarely a threat."
